Vokabelhase

The sympathetic
vocabulary trainer

The Vokabelhase is an easy-to-use and especially sympathetic vocabulary trainer :) It is well suited for old languages, recognizes spelling errors when typing and allows you to query multiple answers to one word. As a result, more complex queries are possible, for example, in addition to the translation of a vocabulary and the genitive or genus. In addition, the Vokabelhase works exclusively on Excel lists, so that you can continue to work independently of the program with your own vocabulary.

The Vokabelhase can also query everything else: history numbers, math problems, and, and, and ...

Example Excel vocabulary list

Excel - Beispiel

The first column of the Excel vocabulary list contains the vocabulary to query and all other columns contain the answers to the vocabulary. For example, the Latin vocabulary procedere is asked for their translation and root form. Several possible answers are separated by commas and thus recognized by the vocabulary hare as single words.

The actual query would look like this in the Vokabelhase:

Excel - Abfrage

It is asked for the root form and the translation for the word procedere. For the stem form there are the three answers procedo, processi and processum. The order in which the words are entered does not matter. Important is the comma between the words and the attention to upper and lower case.
In the example, two words were misspelled for the parent forms, but the two possible translations into German are correct.

The above Excel vocabulary list made it possible to learn irregular verbs in English.

The story behind the Vokabelhase

Once upon a time there was a Latin student who had to learn many thousands of words during her studies. For this she had created her vocabulary as lists in order to print and organize them as needed. Now the desire arose to easily incorporate those lists into a program to practice them. It was important that the program could teach Latin and ancient Greek vocabulary and that there could be not only one answer for a vocabulary but different ones. Spelling errors should be detected and everything should be easy to use and not overloaded with useless ballast. A multi-day search then showed the result that such a program did not exist. So it was a good thing that the man of the hard-working student knew his way around the world of computer languages and invented the Vokabelhase for her on a night full of dreams. And because others also wanted to have a Vokabelhase at home, the pink-held original was copied to many green versions. And everyone can now take his own green Vokabelhase home;)

The vocabulary bunny should also be easy to use in the future and get by without unnecessary frills. Of course that does not speak against new useful features (Would a mobile version of the vocabulary be interesting, for example?). If you have suggestions for improvement or problems and have noticed mistakes, then we look forward to a message to info@okom.de from you.

Tip: Duration of
learning units

We can keep our attention on average for up to 45 minutes and are extremely receptive to learning content. After that you should take a short break. Especially when learning vocabulary pauses are important to not overwhelm the short-term memory and get the many small words in the long-term memory. Very good are depending on how practiced it is 25-45 minutes intensive and active learning and then a break of 5 - 10 minutes. It is important not to include any new information during this break, such as Reading e-mails, watching TV or surfing the internet. Otherwise this prevents the transfer of the learning content from short-term to long-term memory. On the other hand, active exercise to stimulate brain activity or even a short rest is ideal. So lying on the sofa and close your eyes for 5 minutes is allowed, as well as clear out the dishwasher or bring out the garbage. After some learning sessions, sport is also optimal or again all the vocabulary just before going to bed.

Tip: Ancient Greek Windows keyboard
  1. Open the Control Panel on your computer.
  2. Click on "Language" and "Add language" and select "Greek".
  3. Click on the Greek language and then on "Options"
  4. Then click on "Add keyboard" and then select "Greek (polytonian)" (ancient greek and modern Greek = polytonic and monotonic).
  5. In the task bar you will find the symbol for the language (DEU) in the bottom right corner. Click on it and select "Greek".
  6. If you type now, you will generate the Greek characters.
  7. To return to English, change back to "English" in the taskbar.

Of course, in the same way, e.g. install a Russian or Chinese keyboard or other.

Tip: Learning with all senses

The brain keeps information the better, the more intensively they are processed and this happens through our different sensory channels to see, hear, feel and smell. If a vocabulary and its translation are only read in thought, this is not as intense as if the vocabulary were e.g. is pronounced aloud and written, where in the latter also the muscle movements of the hand are added and the letters slowly form in front of their own eyes. By the way, this does not happen when typing on the keyboard. It is also helpful when emotions are integrated into the learning process. Learning material, be it just a vocabulary or a mathematical formula, needs to be charged, alive with everything our senses and emotions have to offer and our brains can not help but remember this colorful cocktail.

Tip: Pieces of vocables

There are vocabulary that are very long and hard to pronounce and then associate them with something familiar is almost impossible. Often, breaking down the vocabulary into smaller parts after e.g. Syllables or sounds.
For example, the Hawaiian name for the Diamond Picasso return fish is Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. This word is long, not easy to pronounce and to learn to learn as a whole word very difficult. A possible mental division would be Humu | Humus | Nuku | Nuku | Apu | Aa. It consists of twice Humu, twice Nuku, Apu and two a's. These parts, articulated separately, will give you an easier-to-remember sound pattern if you are learning well about the acoustics or working with the devoted structure that you associate and learn in parts.

It is really worthwhile to study the different learning methods, try out a lot, and then find out how to tick yourself. Everyone is a mix of different types of learners, and some learn best when writing down vocabulary by hand, for example, while others have to vocalise or move around while learning. Most of them learn best through a combination of different possibilities, some of which are more dominant. It is really important to find out how to learn best, because learning large amounts of material will continue to be costly, but remembering is no longer difficult.
